\nsignature program unique to SENG, learn more about SENG Model Parent Group
\nSMPG\u00a9). It is a great resource and hands-on support program aimed at educating
\nand supporting parents, families, and caregivers of gifted, talented, and
\ntwice-exceptional individuals in their efforts to ensure their children thrive
\nsocially and emotionally. Consider becoming a trained SMPG facilitator and
\nstarting a support group in your area!<\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

SENG
\nModel Parent Groups (SMPGs) bring together 10-20 parents of gifted and talented
\nchildren to discuss such topics as <\/span>motivation, discipline, stress
\nmanagement, and peer relationships. The co-facilitators
\nof these groups are knowledgeable about <\/span>parenting and educating
\ngifted children. However, they do not attempt to give expert advice. Instead,
\ntheir facilitation provides a non\u2010judgmental and nurturing atmosphere.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Biography
\nof Dr. Kristina Collins, the President of SENG <\/span><\/b>(Supporting
\nEmotional Needs of the Gifted).<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Kristina
\nHenry Collins, Ph.D., is the core faculty for Talent Development at Texas State
\nUniversity, San Marcos. She is also a Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ)
\nInstitute Faculty Research Fellow whereby she serves as the NASA STEM EPDC
\n(Educator Professional Development Collaboration) Research and Strategic
\nProjects Specialist.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.
\nCollins boasts almost 30 years of teaching and leadership experience
\nin various educational settings, PK-20. Her educational background includes
\na Ph.D. in educational psychology at The University of Georgia where she
\nalso earned an Ed.S. degree, specializing in gifted and creative education
\n(GCE) with an add-on certificate in educational administration and
\npolicy leadership; a M.S.Ed. degree in mathematics from Jacksonville
\nState University with an add-on certificate in technology
\neducation from the Georgia Piedmont Technical Institute; a B.S.
\ndegree in Engineering from The University of Alabama; and a military
\ndiploma in cryptology and electronic surveillance with the United States
\nNavy. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.
\nCollins\u2019 research foci include social, emotional, and cultural (SEC)
\ncontexts of gifted and talent development; STEM identity development
\nin underrepresented students; and mentoring across the lifespan. Dr.
\nCollins is the proud recipient of the 2020 NAGC SPN Early Career Award her
\n\u201cchange agent\u201d work, research and teaching in higher education since 2015. She
\nwas nominated by Bridges Academy as 2020 \u201cPerson to Watch\u201d for her research and
\nculturally responsive 2E model. She was the 2011 Mary Frasier Equity and
\nExcellence Award recipient, presented to her by Georgia Association of Gifted
\nChildren (GAGC) for her work in advancing educational opportunities for
\nunidentified and underserved students in gifted education. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition
\nto serving on the NAGC board, Dr. Collins is the president of the Supporting
\nthe Emotional Needs of the Gifted, Inc. (SENG) board, and she serves on the
\nadvisory committee for the G-Word Film documentary and Texas Gifted Education
\nFamily Network. Dr. Collins previously served in several other NAGC roles,
\nincluding awards chair of the Special Populations Network, a member of the
\nDiversity & Equity Committee, and a mentor to the Javits-Frasier Teacher
\nScholars. Dr. Collins founded the GAGC regional affiliate organization, East
\nMetro Alliance for Gifted Education (EMAGE), and served as its first executive
\ndirector. <\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Among
\nother services to the field, Dr. Collins is a nationally trained
\nresearch-based mentor-facilitator (NRMN), and she offers
\npresentations, workshops and training related in  the following areas:<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
