Dr. Chris afirma: acredito que existe um equ\u00edvoco de
\nque alunos superdotados s\u00e3o mais prop\u00edcios a terem depress\u00e3o, de que alunos
\nsuperdotados s\u00e3o mais deprimidos. As pessoas t\u00eam essa percep\u00e7\u00e3o do g\u00eanio como
\nalgu\u00e9m um pouco louco. N\u00e3o concordo com estas ideias porque n\u00e3o s\u00e3o
\nverdadeiras. Em muitos casos, alunos realmente superdotados se saem muito
\nmelhor do que seus colegas n\u00e3o identificados. E ent\u00e3o, por exemplo, eu fiz um
\nestudo com alguns dados nacionais, aqui nos Estados Unidos e percebi algumas
\ncompara\u00e7\u00f5es, sobre depress\u00e3o entre alunos superdotados e os alunos n\u00e3o
\nidentificados, e descobri que na verdade seus n\u00edveis de depress\u00e3o eram mais
\nbaixos em rela\u00e7\u00e3o ao grupo de compara\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Mueller diz: gostaria de alertar que pais e professores podem

Neste cap\u00edtulo, os autores invocam duas estruturas
\nte\u00f3ricas – teoria de ajuste pessoa-ambiente e o Modelo Diferenciado de
\nSuperdota\u00e7\u00e3o e Desenvolvimento de Talentos – para entender como os fatores de
\nrisco e prote\u00e7\u00e3o intrapessoais, interpessoais, ambientais e de desenvolvimento
\nse manifestam exclusivamente para as popula\u00e7\u00f5es de alunos talentosos. Para
\nrefletir melhor o estado atual do desenvolvimento do aluno superdotado no
\ns\u00e9culo XXI, os autores colocam \u00eanfase especial em duas tend\u00eancias recentes: uso
\nde m\u00eddia social e cyberbullying, al\u00e9m de revisar a literatura tradicional no
\nque se refere a fatores de risco e prote\u00e7\u00e3o. Mueller & Winsor (2018) colocam
\nmais \u00eanfase na compreens\u00e3o de poss\u00edveis contribuintes \u00fanicos para o
\ndesenvolvimento de depress\u00e3o e idea\u00e7\u00e3o suicida entre alunos superdotados, mas
\ntamb\u00e9m em fornecer estrat\u00e9gias para ajudar pais, professores e outros

Dr. Chris says: I believe that there is a
\nmisconception that gifted students are more likely to have depression, that
\ngifted students are more depressed. People have this perception of genius as
\nbeing a little crazy. I do not agree with these ideas because they are not
\ntrue. In many cases, really gifted students do much better than their
\nunidentified colleagues. And then, for example, I did a study with some
\nnational data, here in the United States and noticed some comparisons, about
\ndepression between gifted students and unidentified students, and found that in
\nfact their levels of depression were lower compared to comparison group.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to warn that parents and teachers can
\nput a lot of pressure on gifted students to perform well and this can be
\nharmful to the education of these students. It is important that everyone
\nunderstands the potential and limitations of the gifted students.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One of
\nthe articles that Dr. Mueller published is entitled:<\/span> <\/span>Depression,
\nSuicide, and Giftedness: Disentangling Risk Factors, Protective Factors, and
\nImplications for Optimal Growth<\/span>  <\/span>(Mueller & Winsor, 2018). In this
\nchapter, the authors invoke two theoretical frameworks – person-environment
\nadjustment theory and the Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent
\nDevelopment – to understand how intrapersonal, interpersonal, environmental and
\ndevelopmental risk and protection factors manifest themselves exclusively for
\npopulations of talented students. To better reflect the current state of
\ndevelopment of gifted students in the 21st century, the authors place special
\nemphasis on two recent trends: use of social media and cyberbullying, in
\naddition to reviewing the traditional literature with regard to risk and
\nprotection factors. Mueller & Winsor (2018) place more emphasis on
\nunderstanding possible unique contributors to the development of depression and
\nsuicidal ideation among gifted students, but also on providing strategies to
\nhelp parents, teachers and other caregivers. The implications of this chapter
\nare for those who are interested in developing intervention strategies that
\nconsider developmental and epidemiological factors when exploring depression
\nand suicide among the gifted.<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n
